Is it possible to visit Regensburg in 2 days?
Regensburg is not a big city. The historic centre, stone bridge and other attractions can be explored in half a day. But there are many beautiful places and sights to see in the Regensburg area. And today we’ll take a look at some of them.
2 Days in Regensburg – route map

WHAT TO SEE IN 2 DAYS IN REGENSBURG
2 DAYS IN REGENSBURG – ITINERARY FOR 1ST DAY
Old Town
We start the morning in Regensburg with a walk around the historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The old town of Regensburg is perfectly preserved, full of restaurants and shops. With narrow medieval streets lined with pastel-coloured houses. This is why so many tourists come to Regensburg.
St. Peter’s Cathedral
You can’t miss St. Peter’s Cathedral while wandering around the historic centre. It played an important role in laying the foundations and development of the Czech Church. The imposing Gothic cathedral is beautiful inside and out and is certainly one of the most beautiful sights to visit in Regensburg.
The Old Town is not big – a couple of hours will be enough time to wander the streets, have a bite to eat in one of the cafés or sit in the beer garden by the Danube. You can stop by the Old Town Hall and enjoy a one-hour tour of the interior.
Here are some tips on where to go in the Old Town for a bite to eat or lunch:
- Weltenburger am Dom – traditional Bavarian restaurant near St. Peter’s Cathedral
- Cupcakery – a sweet spot in the form of cupcakes at the cathedral
- Café Lila – for breakfast, brunch or dessert
- Dicker Mann – traditional Austrian cuisine with a great atmosphere
- Brauereigaststätte Kneitinger – Bavarian cuisine with its own brewery
- Historische Wurstkuchl – for traditional sausages with sauerkraut and beer in the centre right by the Danube
- Malefiz – Café & Bar – a pleasant café ideal for a small snack or dessert
Stone Bridge in Regensburg
After a walk through the Old Town, we continue over the stone bridge, which has stood here since the 12th century. This bridge has even been the model for many important bridges including Avignon, London and Judith’s Bridge in Prague.
Stadtamhof
We cross the bridge over the Danube River and arrive in the medieval Stadtamhof district. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the Old Town and St. Peter’s Cathedral. It used to be a separate village.
Today, you can stroll through its picturesque streets, which have a local feel and are less touristy than Regensburg’s Old Town.
The Stadtamhof district also offers a variety of places to eat. If you’re craving a homemade pie, stop by Kuchenbar right on Main Street. Would you rather go out to eat? Overlooking the Danube, the Spitalgarten restaurant with a beer garden sits a short walk from the Danube.

House of Bavarian History
We’re past lunchtime and it’s time for a little culture. On the edge of the historic centre, the House of Bavarian History stands in perfect contrast to the medieval houses. A modern, partly glazed building where you can learn a lot of interesting facts about Bavaria.

Castle of St. Emmeram
Do you prefer art and decorated interiors? Then don’t miss St. Emmeram Castle. Originally a medieval monastery, it was later partly rebuilt into the residence of the princely family of Thurn and Taxis.

Adjacent to the chateau is the Basilica of St. Emmeram, which looks unassuming from the outside but is beautifully decorated inside. Admission is free, donations are welcome.

Walhalla Memorial
You can imagine the Walhalla Monument as an imposing neoclassical structure standing on a hill high above the Danube. Thanks to this, there is a great view of the surroundings and the sunset is unbeatable. You can sit on the steps in front of the monument and watch the sun set over the horizon of the Danube.
But beyond that, the Walhalla contains a beautifully decorated marble hall with busts and statues of important Germans.
The memorial itself is open 24/7, but you can only get in for a fee: full admission is €4.5 and a reduced €4 for seniors over 65 and disabled. Children under 18 years of age are admitted free of charge.
Opening hours vary according to the season:
- April-October: 9:00-18:00
- November-March: 10:00-12:00 and 13:00-16:00
How to get to the Walhalla Monument
The Walhalla is easily accessible by car – it is only a few kilometres from Regensburg. You can park about 5 minutes below Walhalla, where they have built a landscaped pay and display car park (pay and display for €2.50/2 hours). There are refreshments and free toilets at the memorial.
In the summer season, from April to October, you can board a boat directly in Regensburg, which sails to the foot of the monument. The cruise lasts about 45 minutes and the boat sails three times a day.
You then have an hour to explore the monument and its surroundings before the boat sails back to Regensburg. There is not much to see at the monument except the monument itself, so an hour is really enough in this case. You can find more information here.

2 DAYS IN REGENSBURG – ITINERARY FOR 2ND DAY
On the first day we walked around Regensburg and on the second day we devoted to the surroundings of the city. Our starting point is the town of Kelheim, from where you can do several activities. There are several car parks in the village with a daily rate of 6 €.
Danube Gorge
If you like hiking, Kelheim and Weltenburg are connected by a well-maintained hiking trail that runs through the Danube Gorge. The route is about 5 kilometres long and takes 1.5 hours each way. You can also ride a bike.
On the other side is Weltenburg Monastery, where you can refresh yourself.
The second option is a boat trip that leaves from Kelheim and sails through the gorge to Weltenburg. Find more information here.
If you only want to see the Weltenburg Monastery and the surrounding area, go to the village of Weltenburg, where there is a paid parking lot (4,5 €/day, cash only). From here you can walk along the river to the monastery in 15 minutes.
Hall of Liberation
The Liberation Hall (Befreiungshalle Kelheim), a monumental monument with a white facade, rises in the woods directly above Kelheim. You’ll see it from a distance once you’re near it.
The building was commissioned by King Louis I as a monument to the victorious battles against Napoleon. It also symbolises the unity of Germany, as does the Walhalla Memorial and other buildings in Bavaria.
And it’s really beautiful inside! The domed hall has a decorated coffered ceiling and walls with niches, rows of arcades and galleries.
In addition, there are spectacular views of Kelheim, the Danube River and the surrounding area.
You can come to the Liberation Hall at any time for free. It takes about 30 minutes to get here from Kelheim uphill, or you can park about 5 minutes from the monument in the paid parking lot in the forest (€2.50 for the whole day). If you want to see the memorial from the inside, you buy your ticket in the restaurant building (on the right side of the restaurant – you can’t miss it on your way from the parking lot).
Full admission is €4.50 and reduced admission is €4 for seniors over 65 and disabled. Children under 18 years of age are admitted free of charge.
Open daily: April to October 9:00-18:00 and November to March 10:00-16:00. The ticket office closes 45 minutes before.

Wooden bridge Tatzlwurm
On the second day of our itinerary for 2 days in Regensburg and the surrounding area, we end at the Tatzlwurm wooden bridge. It is one of the longest bridges of its kind in Europe and is unique in its undulating shape. If you like interesting architecture and beautiful views, stop here.
The bridge connects the two banks of the river on the Main-Danube Canal in Essing, and directly underneath it is a cycle path that takes you to Kelheim in half an hour.
If you are only planning a short stop at the bridge, you can park your car for free along the road in Essing.
Ruins of Randeck Castle
From Essing you can head to the ruins of Randeck Castle, which you can see from the bridge high above the valley. You can walk up in about 45 minutes, or you can take a car. There are several viewpoints along the way.
The ruins of the castle are open from March to October from 9:30-18:00 and offer spectacular views of the entire valley. Especially in the late afternoon or evening when the sun goes down. Admission is €2 for adults and €1 for children.
Finish the day at the family-run inn, located next to the ruins. It has a terrace with a view and cooks excellent local cuisine. It is closed in winter, so check the opening hours here in advance.
