I went to Milan with that feeling and was pleasantly surprised.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Milan has a bit of everything \u2014 it\u2019s easily accessible, offers great places to eat, beautiful sights, and modern neighbourhoods. And it shows \u2014 with all its spires, statues, and decorations making it one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Personally, I\u2019d rank it among the top three churches in Italy \u2014 no small feat given the country\u2019s countless magnificent churches \u2014 along with St. Mark\u2019s Basilica in <a href=\"https:\/\/smilingway.cz\/en\/2-days-in-venice-italy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Venice<\/a> and St. Peter\u2019s Cathedral in the <a href=\"https:\/\/smilingway.cz\/en\/vatican-italy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vatican<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the weather is good, the Duomo offers views of the Alps. Be sure to cover your shoulders and knees. I also recommend choosing sturdy shoes, as the marble on the roof is a bit slippery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to tour the Duomo di Milano<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Duomo is one of the few cathedrals that allows access to the roof.<\/strong>  If you&#8217;re not too scared of heights, it&#8217;s definitely worth buying an all-access ticket &#8211; with access to the roof and the interiors themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You can choose between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/en\/milan-attractions-c71749\/tickets-for-duomo-di-milano-entry-ticket-rooftop-p1111408\/?partner=smilingway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">tickets using the lift or the stairs<\/a>, which are slightly cheaper. <\/strong>If you have mobility issues or are going with small children, I definitely recommend the elevator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We took the stairs, and there were quite a lot of them. Then you climb a few more steps to reach the highest point of the roof, where you can enjoy spectacular views. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve enjoyed the view from the roof, you&#8217;ll descend the stairs directly into the cathedral (there&#8217;s no longer a lift). Here, a member of staff will scan your ticket again and then let you in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inside of the cathedral is stunning and vast. Children under 5 and people with disabilities accompanied by a carer are admitted free of charge (if you have a disability card, you must pick up tickets at the infopoint).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Opening hours<\/strong>: The Cathedral is open daily from 9:00 to 19:00 (last entry at 18:10).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>How to get in<\/strong>: The cathedral is located right in the centre of Milan. The yellow line M3 stops in the square, Duomo station.   <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We had purchased tickets in advance for opening time \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/en\/milan-attractions-c71749\/tickets-for-duomo-di-milano-entry-ticket-rooftop-p1111408\/?partner=smilingway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">we booked them here<\/a>.<\/strong> We were here in September and it was already pretty crowded early in the morning. We lined up right away for the 9:00am group on the left side of the cathedral (there is an entrance for the stairs and elevator).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/smilingway.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Duomo-di-Milano-Milan.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/smilingway.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Duomo-di-Milano-Milan.jpg\" alt=\"Duomo di Milano rooftop\" class=\"wp-image-199211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smilingway.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Duomo-di-Milano-Milan.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/smilingway.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Duomo-di-Milano-Milan-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/smilingway.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Duomo-di-Milano-Milan-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/smilingway.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Duomo-di-Milano-Milan-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Then we went through a short security check, showed our tickets on our mobile phones and went inside.<\/strong>  We didn&#8217;t have to wait in line for tickets and risk getting in later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Honestly, I can\u2019t imagine how the tour works later in the day when even more people arrive. There isn\u2019t much room on the terraces and roof, so with large crowds you won\u2019t get a chance to enjoy everything peacefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you plan to buy tickets on the spot, they are sold in the Royal Palace wing on the right side of the cathedral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tickets for the Duomo di Milano<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several types of tickets to choose from, depending on what you want to see:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/en\/milan-attractions-c71749\/tickets-for-duomo-di-milano-entry-ticket-p1111552\/?partner=smilingway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Ticket to the church without terraces<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/en\/milan-attractions-c71749\/tickets-for-duomo-di-milano-rooftop-access-p977806\/?partner=smilingway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Ticket for terraces without interiors<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/en\/milan-attractions-c71749\/tickets-for-duomo-di-milano-entry-ticket-rooftop-p1111408\/?partner=smilingway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Combined ticket &#8211; terraces and interiors<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We chose a combined option (terraces and church interiors). The weather wasn&#8217;t too good and we didn&#8217;t see the Alps that day, but it was still worth it. Or head to the small <strong>medieval Piazza Mercanti, which<\/strong> is a little hidden away, about 2 minutes from Piazza del Duomo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I recommend trying <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/9RQNBbfHWQsNp8D38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the panzerotti at Luina&#8217;s bakery<\/a>,<\/strong> located just a short walk from the gallery. It is a series of ancient Roman columns dating from the end of the 2nd century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the Colonne di San Lorenzo, continue south through the medieval gateway to the last point on today\u2019s itinerary. The Naviglio Grande canal is about a 10-minute walk or a few tram stops away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">19:00 Naviglio district<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Naviglio district <\/strong>was once a system of canals designed by Leonardo da Vinci. The painting is no longer in good condition, so the number of visitors is limited to 1,000 people per day. It may seem like a lot, but tickets tend to sell out months in advance. Inside, I was absolutely stunned by its beautiful and well-preserved frescoes.  Many of these frescoes were painted by artists who followed the teachings of Leonardo da Vinci.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Practical information:<\/strong> Admission to the church is free, donations are welcome. It&#8217;s closed on Mondays. It is just a short walk from the Church of San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fortress now serves as a museum and hosts various collections including art, antique furniture and musical instruments. Behind the castle is the <strong>large Sempione Park<\/strong>, where locals spend their leisure time. There are plenty of benches, ponds, toilets and refreshments. An ideal place to relax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other side of the park, the <strong>Arco della Pace<\/strong> towers majestically (about a 15-minute walk from Sforza Castle). There is a lot to see in the museum and it&#8217;s really big, so we&#8217;ll plan a visit first thing in the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here you will find exhibits ranging from transport and energy to the inventions of Leonardo da Vinci, to whom the museum is dedicated. In both cases, follow the signs at the airport to guide you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buses stop at Milano Centrale Station, which is also where you\u2019ll return to the airport from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I used Malpensa airport on my second trip to Lombardy. Also in this case <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/milan-l139\/prevody-tc152\/?partner_id=8ABF128&amp;utm_medium=online_publisher\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">I purchased tickets in advance<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; you only choose the day, not the hour.
